#56: Bedazzle my world

24 Feb

Rufus gave me a bedazzler last night. I can’t wait to glam up my wardrobe.

Juggle Mania

9 Oct

Earlier this week one of our volunteers put on a juggling workshop. It only confirmed that I suck at juggling, but it was a lot of fun to watch everyone try.

Twister - Thai style

This week we played a mean game of twister to practice our Thai colors and body parts. Although I ended up losing the game (because I’m so uncoordinated and my balance sucks), I will say that I was the best at remembering the Thai words. Go me!

Ice Cream Monster

23 Aug
I have lots to report on, but for now I will just share the most wonderful discovery that I made in town this weekend: ice cream fondue! And believe me, it’s as amazing as it sounds. I shared it with another girl (although it’s meant to be split between 4 people) and I was in heaven. Unfortunately, I gained 1.5 kilos this weekend. Mai pen rai, I will hula hoop it off this week 🙂

Ice cream fondue: 9 scoops of ice cream, 1 brownie, banana slices, melon balls, waffle cone wafers, whipped cream and a cherry all dipped in amazing melted chocolate.

I didn’t know it was possible to get kicked out of a bar in Thailand…!

11 Aug

Today the entire Mirror Foundation flooded. It poured all morning, and within a few hours, this is what the walking path looked like. There are 3 steps to the bridge that are under water.

Last Saturday we did karaoke at a bar in town. Unfortunately, the fun didn’t last long because we got kicked out of the bar. A volunteer had bought a few bottles of whiskey for everyone, and by about 11:00 everyone was pretty smashed.

Dancing at R&B bar.

Party at P’Noi’s. Everyone usually shows up there on Saturday nights for a barbeque, but this week it seemed like an especially large crowd because of all the new volunteers.

The clock tower in Chiang Rai changes color every night at 8:00. This isn’t a great picture, but it’s really beautiful.
All of us crammed into a songtow on our way to Big C.
Riding on top of the songtow. You can’t tell, but we’re actually sitting on the roof of the truck. It was really fun, but we had to dodge branches the whole time.

Nerd? We prefer intellectual badass.

I’ve been designing t-shirts for student honors council at school to proudly display our nerdiness. It’s been super fun because I’ve been learning about Adobe Illustrator in school so I got to use some of my new skills. Here are a few of the designs I’ve come up with. (The last one only makes sense if you watch The Big Bang Theory.) Please let me know if you have any other ideas for me.

I’ve resisted for too long

19 Feb

For about a month I’ve been resisting the urge to list 25 facts about myself or other such nonsense on facebook. Fortunately for you Chelsea-lovers, my narcissism has finally won out. I got this list of 20 firsts from Rachel T. Thanks for helping me waste some time at work!

1. Who was your first love? Sean Peterson – I think it goes all the way back to kindgergarten.

2. Who was your first kiss and when? First kiss ever – random boy at the ice skating rink when I was 16. First kiss that counts – Andy at Prom. I was sick of him not kissing me, so I finally made the first move. I’m awesome like that 😉

3. Who was your first prom date? Andy Wasden, see above.

4. Who was your first roommate? Does Molly count? Otherwise I’ve never had a “room” roommate. I lived with Heather, Abby, Ann Marie and crazy Julie my freshman year of college. Is it sad that I only ever refer to her as crazy Julie?

5. What was your first job? Snow cone technician at Glacier’s Yummy Ice.

6. What was your first car? 1993 Buick Skylark. Oh Dina, how I DON’T miss you.

7. When did you go to your first funeral? The first one I can remember was my grandma’s about 4 years ago.

8. There was no #8 on this list, so I’m making up my own random fact. First time you got a speeding ticket? That would be NEVER.

9. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown? Never, unless you count Sugar House as “away”.

10. Who was your first grade teacher? Mrs. Hallowell. She taught me what the word perseverant means.

11. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane? I think it was to go to Colorado to stay with my aunt while my family traveled the globe without us. I am just guessing that we flew, I can’t actually remember the plane ride.

13. Where did you go for your first date and who was it with? My first date was with Andy Wasden. (Didn’t know he’d pop up so much on this quiz haha.) We went to the Sadie Hawkins dance, ice blocking and to Wingers. My wallet got stolen at the restaurant so I had to use the cash my mom left us for food because they went out of town.

14. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with? I can’t really remember ever sneaking out. Mostly I was a curfew breaker. My parents never stayed awake, so I never had to come home to check in and then sneak back out. Wait, once Molly and I snuck out with our car before we were licensed drivers.

15. Who was your first best friend and are you still friends with them? Vienna Boyd and we’re facebook friends. Somehow I don’t think that counts.

16. Who was the first person to send you flowers? My mom. She’s nice.

17. Where did you live the first time you moved out of your parents house? Possibly the most ghetto house in all of Sugar House. We had outside plants growing in through our windows. You can’t beat $230 a month for your own room though.

18. This one was also missing from the list. Let’s do first time you failed a test? 8th grade geography. Often times I can I fool people into thinking I’m smarter than I am. Unfortunately, I was unable to fool Mr. Funk. I failed our quiz nearly every week.

19. Who’s wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid or a groomsman? Christian and JoLynne.

20. What is the first thing you do in the morning? Hit snooze about 5 times, think of several excuses I could use to get out of going to school/work, decide that I have to go because I’ve inevitably missed too much time already and then force myself to get up. Then I put in my contacts and brush my teeth.

I’m a freak, what can I say?

2 Dec

Since I have been so so terrible in updating my blog, and because Kylie tagged me in one of hers, I figured I would respond in kind. Here’s 6 quirky things about myself.

1. I have never been pulled over. It’s pretty shocking if you ask me because I am a very absent-minded driver and I speed pretty much all the time.

2. I tend to become obsessive about the things I like. If I start watching a tv show on dvd, I will stay up ALL night (and I literally mean the entire night) to finish the episode/disc/season etc. That’s also why I sometimes make large purchases spontaneously. When I decide I want something, I immediately have to have it. Same goes for life decisions. Remember how I started thinking about taking the semester off and 1 hour later all the paperwork was signed…

3. I hate anything soggy. I can’t even have a french dip sandwich.

4. I love to make lists. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as crossing things off a list. Sometimes I add things that I’ve already done to my to-do list just so I can cross it off.

5. I can twist my tongue all the way around in both directions. (Hopefully that makes sense.)

6. I’m more than a little OCD. Mostly things just have to be even. Molly used to like to drive me crazy by cracking all the knuckles on one hand but not the other. I also really like piles. They make fun of me at work for having tons of stackers to organize all my piles of papers.

I tag Rachel T. and Rachel W. for this post.

Halloween is an excellent opportunity for grown ups to relive their childhoods. They get to dress up, eat lots of candy, and, if you’re like me, play all the games you loved as a little kid. To start off my Hallween Extravaganza, I had a pumpkin carving contest. Christian and Rachel came over with the kids and joined m, Molly, Kyle, Andy and two of Molly’s Oakcrest buddies in the ulitmate carving contest.

I tried to get fancy with the paper pattern, but it was a little to fragile. The window in my pumpkin broke. Luckily, broken windows only add to the spookiness of Halloween.

On Halloween night, Kylie and Landon were great enough to invite Molly, Kyle and I over for a rockin’ All Hallows Eve party. After much deliberation, the three of us dressed up as Harry Potter characters – complete with time turner, dark mark and platinum blonde hair.

Everyone at the party had excellent costumes. The Burgener were Han Solo and Princess Leia, their friend Jesse dressed up as a founding father (Hamilton, Washington, who knows?) and Jenna was Elphaba from Wicked.

During the party we played pin the tail on the werewolf, complete with handmade tails and blindfold.
Next came the cookie decorating contest. I won by a landslide.

Then there was the most classic party game of all. The eating donuts off a string race. I put up an admirable fight, but Jesse beat me.

Landon won after he steamrolled Kyle.

All in all, this Halloween was a smashing success. Thanks for participating everyone!

Maybe I will win

There’s this contest to win a free handbag and if you post about it on your blog, then you get an extra 25 entries. So here it is. Go to and enter to win.
